I am currently engrossed in a book called 'A Piece of Cake', by Cupcake Brown. And no, it's not some recipe book or marathon eating guidebook, albeit the delicious name and title. It's sugar and fat free,I tell ya!
I haven't read in a few months. The last book that I finished reading was something about taking up the responsiblities of having a god daughter. Anyway, I have loved reading for as long as I can remember, however I have slowed down while I am in Dublin.....just because.
It was while I was in Ladybird Kindertargen, I think, which had cultivated my interest in reading. We started of with Peter and Jane, and slowly ventured into Enid Blyton.Back in my days in primary school, I would buy a book each week.Yes, I started of with the famous story book from Singapore.I think it's called Bookworm club or something.I still have a copy of it.
As I grew older, it was the Sweet Valley Junior series. Although I wasn't a fan of Sweet Valley, as I had thought it was too romantic and lovey-dopey for my interest, I did however read up to 10 series from it. I guess, I have all along ,not been part of the 'in- dainty girly- girls'. I wasn't into collecting all of the Sweet Valley Junior, High,University series, which they all did. You'd be surprised how much they spend on those books. But well, at least they were for a good cause.
When we were all in Primary 5, R.L Stine 'Ghost' series, were the coolest and 'in' thing to read. And, yes again, I did not buy all of the series, but I read more Ghost Stories than the Sweet Valley books. Some of us went a bit further and got engaged into reading Rusell Lee's Singapore's best Ghost Stories, this time I read all of the series, and had all these wild imagination going on.
Don't get me wrong, I do read some Malay books back in primary, but it was just the Tingkatan Satu di Sekolah Sri Melur, or something, which was an adaptation from an English book. i would have agreed that, it was my classmates and the girlfriends that I had, that had influenced my reading interests.hehe.Giler Nerd, I know.
When I was 12, Alice and I, were really into the Love Stories series. I still have half of the collection. I used my RM30/month allowance from my Grandma, to buy a book each week. At times, I curi-curi beli when my parents are buying books from MPH. Hehe.We were all, also into buying Magazines. You name it, we read it. From Cleo to Smash Hits to Top of The Pops to Galaxy. Free posters man!. But my dad did not like me buying magazines, so I usually just borrow from friends.
When the series got too boring and Alice was more inclined towards Nora Roberts', I preferred Autobigraphy books. I read most of the Saudi Princess stories and the Arab girls and women who were tortured and killed, and the stories on arranged marriage and brutal 'circumcision' of women. I read autobiography books for as long as I could remember in High School, but honestly, my interest in reading slowed down, because I had moved to a new school, Subang Utama, and didn't have many friends. Then there was PMR and SPM, and I was reading more school books and Mastika.
As the years go by, I did not stop reading, but I read less and less.I still read some books in my UiTM days, but that's how far I can remember.I read. Until, one day, a friend of mine, suggested, Da Vinci Code. It took me two, re-reading sessions, before I was hooked to Dan Brown's books.
I wouldn't say I'm still as hooked on to books as I was before, but the current book I'm reading, which I mentioned earlier, has drugged me. I cannot put down the book because I just want to know what's going to happen next and I have refused some invitations out.Oh, yes, nerd.:P
